In this day and age, we are all seeing drastic social, political and physical changes to our normal conceptions of reality. Leigh Toldi addresses her reactions to these pressures with an installation of over 100 miniature drawings and paintings that tell an abstract story of survival.

This installation pays witness to humanity’s instinctive move towards healthy personal and communal action when faced with the massive destruction of deep humanitarian concepts and rich natural environments. Designed specifically for the Peninsula Museum of Art’s Studios Gallery, the exhibition is made up of sumi ink and gouache paintings.

Leigh Toldi: Harvesting Night Strategies

On a daily basis from August 2017 through August 2018 the intuitive painter responded spontaneously, through her artwork, to the public and personal events that unfolded. The images that emerged are not descriptive visuals of the disasters that occurred, but instead symbolically loaded artworks drawn from the perspective of mankind’s instinctively resilient nature.

The tiny characters in her designs can be found exploring steep natural landscapes, immersing themselves in the joyful and physical movements of dance and skateboarding, or meditatively sitting at work and in prayer. With the dangerously powerful forces of nature at play in the background, it is easy to imagine that these figures are navigating through chaos on meaningful pathways of hope.

PMA is also home to the Museum Studios, 30 working artist studios where visual artists work and exhibit their creations in painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, jewelry, fiber art, and millinery.

Museum Hours:  11am to 5pm Wednesday through Sunday.  Free admission and parking in our lot.  Please visit the Museum in person, online at peninsulamuseum.org, or find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Our Mission
The Peninsula Museum of Art is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that enhances our community and enriches lives through art and education.  The inclusion of artists’ studios as a department of the Museum is a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between the creative community of professional-level artists and the community at large.
